Simply for Fun:
11 Reasons why Patrick is a Horrible Friend to Spongebob
If you’re a baby millennial, a gen z, or on the cusp, then you’ve probably heard of the show Spongebob Squarepants, Spongebob for short. Spongebob premiered on Nickelodeon in July of 1999, and it quickly became a favorite in the cartoon sector of television. For those of you who have no idea what this amazing cartoon is, where have you been? Please look up the show before continuing or this post will make little to no sense to you.
In Spongebob, protagonist Spongebob has a best friend named Patrick Star. Patrick is a starfish who acts as consistent, comic relief in the show because well…he’s dense. As an OG fan of this ridiculous cartoon, I have found myself as an adult rewatching episodes of this childhood favorite.
One night in the midst of the pandemic, I was watching Spongebob, and I realized that Patrick is more devious than he seems. Blame it on his lack of intelligence, but there is a lack of balance in the friendship between Spongebob and Patrick, and I’ve got a whole list of why.
Here are 11 reasons why Patrick is a horrible friend to Spongebob:
-
- In episode “Best Day Ever”, Spongebob is trying to have the best day ever, and when he goes to jellyfish fields to jellyfish with Patrick, Patrick not only breaks his net, prompting SpongeBob to give him his only backup, but he breaks Spongebob’s spare net, and proceeds to beg to use SpongeBob’s new fancy net. When Spongebob is kind enough to agree, Patrick hogs the net and doesn’t give Spongebob a turn. Patrick is part of the ruin of Spongebob’s best day, and he did it on purpose (S4, Ep.20)! Whack friend vibes.
-
- In episode “Dumped”, Spongebob allows Patrick to use his laundry machine because his is broken, and when Gary, Spongebob’s pet, becomes enamored by Patrick, Patrick loves the attention and steals Spongebob’s pet from him. AND THEN, Patrick rubs Gary’s affection in SpongeBob’s face (S2, Ep.9). Like get your own pet bro.
-
- In episode “Missing Identity”, Spongebob needs to retrace his steps to find his lost name tag, so he asks Patrick to reenact the greeting he gave Spongebob that morning, and Patrick did not take the reenactment seriously (S3, Ep. 18). Laughing and being obnoxious instead of helping his friend smh.
-
- In episode “The Secret Box”, Patrick kept a horrible picture of SpongeBob, so he could laugh at it, and then Patrick tormented Spongebob with the string in the box where the secret picture was hidden (S2, Ep.15). Manipulative ass shit.
-
- In episode “Something Smells”, Patrick told Spongebob that people were running away from him because he was ugly when really Spongbob’s breath stank (S2, Ep.1). Like tell him how you really feel.
-
- In episode “Rock A Bye Bi-Valve”, Patrick and SpongeBob agree to raise a baby clam, and Patrick was a terrible father, not changing a single diaper (S3, Ep.9). Ole deadbeat dad ass.
-
- In episode “New Student Starfish”, Patrick got Spongebob in trouble at boating school and lost him his good noodle star (S3, Ep.13) Patrick is such a bad influence.
-
- In episode “Wet Painters”, Spongebob and Patrick were tasked with painting Mr. Krabs’ house and not only did Patrick blow a big paint bubble that, while almost perfectly painting the wall, ended up getting a spot of paint on Mr. Krabs’ first dollar, but he also had a dollar to replace the “ruined” one, and used it for a vending machine instead. (S3, Ep.10). Like he did not need that candy bar that bad.
-
- In episode “Home Sweet Pineapple”, Spongebob lost his home to nematodes, and when Patrick invited Spongebob to live with him under his rock, he hogged the rock, and then beat the shit out of him (S1, Ep. 5). Nightmare my ass!
-
- In episode “Driven To Tears”, Patrick got his license and a free boatmobile, and he gloated about it to SpongeBob (S4, Ep. 17). He was giving Regina George energy.
-
- In episode “Life of Crime”, Spongebob and Patrick pop a balloon that they borrowed, and when they are on the run from the law, they each have a single candy bar to eat, Spongebob decides to save his own candy bar while Patrick inhales his. Then, Patrick accuses Spongebob of eating his candy bar! (S1, Ep. 7) Like don’t get delusional big hungry!
So, is being disproportionately, intellectually challenged enough to excuse Patrick’s behavior? I don’t think so, but what do you think? Leave a comment below.
