Simply for Fun:
Doughnut Stop Me Now
First off, I’d like to thank you for clicking on this blog despite the horrible pun I made.
When I lived in my hometown, there was a local donut shop that had everyone’s mouth watering. I had gone pretty much my entire childhood never knowing it existed until one day one of my best friends told me about the establishment…Golden Donuts. When I first bit into a Golden Donuts donut, I was in awe of the delicious doughy yet moist sensation. It was a doughnut that wasn’t too heavy, but was just as kremey as Krispy Kreme that it could rival the famous franchise. Every time I wanted something sweet, I would go to Golden Donuts and grab a single donut (or two) and devour the deliciousness that it was (and still is). I wouldn’t say I’m a big donut girl, but Golden Donuts helped me appreciate the beloved breakfast-type dessert, and now every time I visit home, I must stop by and grab one.
Recently, I moved to New York, and during my first month, I was living in Brooklyn with some extended family members. I woke up one morning really craving the same euphoric sensation I’ve found in that hometown hole in the wall. So, I decided to hop on the city bus and subway and venture out to 5 donut shops in Brooklyn to see if any of them can rival my fave and become my go to treat shop.
So, here it is… 5 Brooklyn Donut Shops, and what I think of them.
For this judgment, I will rate each donut shop out of 5 on the following: price of a single donut, atmosphere of the shop, presentation of the donut, quality of service, and taste (does it make my mouth water?). The winner has the honor of making a loyal, regular customer out of me.
(Disclaimer: I could not try all the donut shops in Brooklyn because some were not open on the random Monday I decided to do this.)
1. Samoa Donut – Moe’s Donuts on Nassau Avenue
- Price: 5/5; $2.34 (after tax) – excellent price point for a single doughnut!
- Atmosphere: 5/5 – diner style shop, like a classic doughnut shop, music, plenty of places to sit
- Presentation: 5/5 – beautiful looking doughnut emulating a Samoa Girl Scout cookie perfectly
- Service: 3/5 – I wasn’t greeted when I walked in, and it took about 3 minutes for me to be noticed; however, it seemed that there was only one person working in the shop, so no big deal
- Taste: 3/5 – the doughnut was fluffy and tasty, similar to a Samoa, but it didn’t make my mouth water. Great quality for the price though!
2. Triple Chocolate Donut – Dun-Well Doughnuts on Montrose Avenue
- Price: 4/5; $3.81 (after tax) – okay price but not as affordable as the first option
- Atmosphere: 3/5 – cool rustic interior, wooden floors, nice vibe, no indoor seating
- Presentation: 4/5 – very beautiful looking doughnut with a generous amount of toppings
- Service: 4/5 – greeted immediately – nothing special, but that’s alright
- Taste: 4/5 – very good, toppings were plentiful, and dough was squishy, but not kremey
3. Cookies and Cream Doughnut (I think): Fan-Fan Doughnuts on Lafayette Avenue
- Price: 4/5; $3.50 (after tax) – decent price for a single doughnut
- Atmosphere: 4/5 – clean shop, inviting atmosphere, beautiful doughnut display, music playing
- Presentation: 4/5 – clean look of the doughnut, and we love a garnish
- Service: 5/5 – welcomed immediately, quick service, kind greeting, and great customer service
- Taste: 3.5/5 – tasty and semi-fluffy doughnut; the kreme was good, and the cookies on top were good
4. Kraken Dark Rum Doughnut – Dough on Vanderbilt Avenue
- Price: 1/5; $6.13 – very expensive for a single doughnut
- Atmosphere: 5/5 – modern vibe, music playing, indoor seating, beautiful doughnut display
- Presentation: 5/5 – beautiful looking doughnut; unique look and again we love a chocolate garnish
- Service: 5/5 – greeted immediately; friendly service; offered me a bag; patient with me choosing the doughnut I wanted
- Taste: 4.5/5 – delicious and the most unique flavor out of the others I tried; soft, doughy taste that leaves you wanting more
5. Coconut Creme Doughnut – Doughnut Plant on Flatbush Avenue
- Price: 2/5; $5.45 – pricy for a single doughnut
- Atmosphere: 4/5 – modern look, indoor seating, inviting vibe, clean looking doughnut display
- Presentation: 4/5 – very enticing look that matches the flavor well; unique shape for a doughnut
- Service: 4/5 – friendly and speedy service, lots of eye contact, helpful with giving me a bag for my other doughnuts
- Taste: 4.5/5 – flakey, kremey, generous amount of filling; mouth did start to water a bit
Overall, each doughnut had the potential to be my favorite, and I enjoyed the flavors of all the ones I chose. However, there can only be one Brooklyn doughnut shop to have my loyalty from now on, and that winner is… **imaginary drum roll**
Dough on Vanderbilt Avenue!! Even though I think the price is ridiculous, I think this shop had the most unique flavors to choose from out of all the shops I tried. I think the Dark Rum doughnut may have been more pricy because its got some booze in it, which is totally fair, and let me tell you the doughnut was mouth watering!
